The initial lockdowns began in late March 2020 and continued intermittently, wreaking havoc on revenue streams. Simultaneously, decreased alcohol consumption, online gambling competition and tighter regulations added more strain. A severe slump in international travel to Australia because of border restrictions resulted in a substantial loss of income from tourism spending. Despite these challenges, the industry has witnessed a silver lining with a rise in discretionary income.
