Mixed bag: Wholesale bypass is limiting demand as food-service venues recover from the pandemic
Fruit and vegetable wholesalers have faced mixed conditions over the past few years. Rising health consciousness and household disposable income have helped boost industry revenue growth. Selling higher value fruits and vegetables, like organic produce, has supported fruit and vegetable wholesalers. This trend has helped offset fluctuating demand from supermarkets, which are increasingly buying straight from farmers. The COVID-19 pandemic has limited patronage at cafes, restaurants and takeaway outlets, constraining demand. Overall, industry revenue is anticipated to decline at an annualised 6.6% over the five years through 2022-23, to $11.2 billion. This trend includes an anticipated drop of 1.3% in 2022-23.
Industry businesses wholesale fresh fruit and vegetables. Produce can be brushed, washed or packaged by either producers or packaging companies. The industry excludes sales of canned or processed fruit and vegetables.
This report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecasts, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.
