About Condoms

Condoms are worn to prevent pregnancy and STDs. There are male condoms and female condoms. Male condoms are flexible sheaths worn over the penis. Female condoms are disposable covers made of nitrile. Women use these before and during sexual intercourse to prevent direct genital contact and the exchange of bodily fluids to avoid pregnancy, STDs, and STIs. Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “The market has witnessed a rising popularity of female condoms in recent times. In developed countries, women are experimenting with condoms, thereby creating a demand for such products in the country. In the US, government officials gave away 200,000 female condoms at convenience stores, beauty salons, and clinics for its DC program. The Washington DC district initiated the program to curb the rising HIV rates in the area by giving away free female condoms. According to the report, in the contraceptive market, around 99% of women aged 15-44, who have had sexual intercourse, have utilized at least one contraceptive method. The use of birth control pills is very effective, but it comes with its side-effects. It leads to weight gain, blood clots, mood disorders, and other significant issues such as nausea, headache, breast tenderness, or spotting during the menstrual cycle. Users have also reported depression or mood swings, which further leads to a reduction in sex drive among users. The pills curb the hormone production in the ovaries and also raises the level of sex hormone binding globulin. A 2006 study conducted by the Boston University had found that the change in libido lasted for months after women stopped taking the pills. Thus, more and more female buyers are adopting female condoms rather than contraceptive pills.

Further, the report states that public attitude toward sex differs from country to country, and the brands need to customize their messages on a local scale. Some people believe using condoms makes sex less pleasurable and believe STIs will not happen to them. Such consumers need to be empowered through education to make use of contraception methods.
