No through road: COVID-19 travel restrictions have put the brakes on revenue growth
The Motorhome, Campervan and Caravan Rental industry has covered some tough terrain. Lockdown periods along with international and state border closures introduced following the outbreak of COVID-19 made it virtually impossible for tourists to travel. Plunging revenue ensued, and while most companies were able to ride it out, a lack of international travellers was too much for some. A return to COVID-normal trading conditions along with an easing of border restrictions, has brought international tourists back in, helping with the recovery in revenue. All-in-all industry revenue has been falling at an annualised 4.2% over the past five years and is expected to total $189.8 million in 2023-24, when revenue will spike up by an estimated 13.2% owing to a surge in demand from passenger car rental and hiring and an expansion in domestic tourist visitor nights.
Industry players rent or lease out motorhomes, campervans, caravans and trailers that are owned by the same company. Aggregation websites that rent out motorhomes, campervans and caravans not owned by the business are not included in the industry. Purchasing and lease-to-own arrangements are also excluded from the industry.
