A much-needed pick me up: Coffee shop industry wakes up after COVID-19 restrictions ease
Australia's coffee culture has driven the Coffee Shops industry. As coffee drinking has continued to grow in popularity, the number of boutique coffee houses has increased. Coffee drinking has become entrenched in the daily routines of many Australian consumers, supporting industry demand. However, the COVID-19 pandemic hindered industry revenue at its peak. Inner-city hubs of specialty coffee suffered from the shift to online learning and remote working. Nonetheless, coffee shops in residential areas picked up business lost to inner city operators. Industry demand has returned to normalcy after pandemic restrictions were lifted. Overall, industry revenue has risen at an annualised 0.6% over the past five years and is expected to total $3.9 billion in 2023-24, when revenue will jump by 3.4%.
Industry operators sell coffee, other hot and cold beverages, and light snacks to consumers. The industry excludes establishments with table service and made-to-order meals, such as cafes.
