About Gastrointestinal Stents

Gastrointestinal stents consist of stents that include trans-hepatic, esophageal, biliary stents, pancreatic and duodenal stents. The stents are used during colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, GI bleeding, and other diseases. SEMSs are considered to be the most commonly used mesh cylindrical stents with large diameter to treat severe gastrointestinal conditions. The gastrointestinal stents are positioned under endoscopic view with fluoroscopic imaging guidance. The different types of stents used in gastrointestinal include esophageal stents, duodenal stents, and enteral colonic stents. Biliary stents are being used to treat biliary infection cholangitis and biliary decompression during benign and malignant conditions since the 1970s. The major obstructions in biliary stents include malignant and benign strictures, stenotic sphincters, obstructed endoprostheses, and bile duct stones

Analysts forecast the global gastrointestinal stents market to grow at a CAGR of 3.89% during the period 2016-2020.

Global Gastrointestinal Stents Market 2016-2020

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: BVM Medical, ConMed, EndoChoice, Hobbs Medical, Merit Medical Systems, Olympus, and Surgimedik

Commenting on the report, an analyst said: “The advances in materials, design, and technology for stents have enabled the introduction of specially designed stents, which are used for specific conditions. The recent materials used in the development of non-vascular stents such as gastrointestinal stents are poly lactic acid-glycolic acid, polycaprolactone, and poly acryl amine. These biodegradable materials have advantages such as the elimination of stent removal and biocompatibility. The use of self-expandable metal stents for treating perforations and anastomotic leaks seems to be promising for SEMSs, which began their evolution with plastic. These may soon evolve into biodegradable stents.”

According to the report, gerontology diseases disproportionately affect the aging population, with prominent gastrointestinal disorders such as diverticulosis, bowel diseases, gastrointestinal malignancies, and urinary and fecal related problems. The changes in lifestyle like the increase in unhealthy diet and physical inactivity will result in raised blood pressure, blood glucose, lipids, and obesity. In the past few years, there has been a rise in morbidity and mortality from chronic diseases such as esophageal cancer, colorectal cancer, rectal cancer, and gastrointestinal related critical disorders.

Further, the report states that the gastrointestinal devices are classified as class III devices and are subjected to high risk, and regulatory authorities have enforced a stringent regulatory framework and labeling requirement for medical devices. Medical devices are always considered high risk and undergo safety examination to demonstrate medical efficacy before they are granted approval. The FDA prevents unsafe and ineffective devices from entering or remaining in the market. As a result, a huge proportion of the devices in the market do not yet have FDA approval but are still in the process of attaining it. It may take several years for the devices to satisfy the requirements of the regulatory agencies. Failure to follow such laws and regulations can have an adverse effect on the growth of the market. These approvals are time-consuming. Some devices undergo rigorous clinical testing before their approval and require pre-market approval (PMA), and sometimes an extensive agency review process is followed for particular devices.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
