About Maritime Patrol Aircraft

After the Second World War, MPA were primarily designed for long-range patrolling to track and hunt down submarines. In the 1990s, they evolved to carry out surveillance either at sea or in the coastal regions. After 9/11, the US and its allies used MPA for reconnaissance and battlespace surveillance. Thus, MPA have transitioned from submarine trackers to performing anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASUW) missions, and now even to multi-mission MPA.

The analysts forecast the global maritime patrol aircraft market to grow at a CAGR of 4.71% during the period 2017-2021.

New Report Released: - Global Maritime Patrol Aircraft Market 2017-2021

The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global maritime patrol aircraft market: Airbus, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Saab.

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: BAE Systems, Embraer, Harbin Aircraft Industry, Leonardo-Finmeccanica, and Thales.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “One trend in market is integration of maritime patrol platform with advanced systems. With the growing demand for advanced maritime patrolling solutions, defense contractors are focusing on the development of new technologies that can be integrated with torpedoes, sonobuoys, and other sensors in the system. Modern maritime aircraft are equipped with advanced systems as varied as infrared receivers and cameras, on-board radar, electronic signals intelligence (ELINT) sensors, magnetic anomaly detectors (MAD), and sonobuoys. Sonobouys enable naval and marine forces to detect and track hostile submarines in the ocean. Information from these systems enable MPA to perform precision attacks. Most MMA and a growing number of MPA are also equipped with highly advanced weapons such as anti-ship missiles and torpedoes that are capable of striking surface and sub-surface targets.”

According to the report, one driver in market is south China Sea dispute. China's extension of its sea borders toward the Southeast sea is creating rifts among the nations that border the South China Sea, a territory that has long been disputed by these nations. International law stipulates that every country is obliged to use its own ocean borders and is not allowed to enter the territorial waters of other nations without permission. However, China is building up artificial islands in the South China Sea and claiming that it has sole sovereignty over most of this sea. Although the claim is not recognized officially, the construction activity has gained international attention due to the strategic nature of the area under contention. Bordering countries like Taiwan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei, and Vietnam and other countries like the US, India, and Australia are apprehensive that China's actions will affect their trade routes through the sea. Additionally, industry experts have estimated that the area has significant reserves of oil and gas. These growing tensions are driving the acquisition of highly advanced ISR platforms such as MPA.

Further, the report states that one challenge in market is growing adoption of strategic bombers in maritime patrol. Traditionally, strategic bombers were exclusively used to drop heavy air-to-ground weaponry onto distance targets for incapacitating the enemy's attack and resistance capabilities in warfare. With changing warfare strategies, these bombers are also being increasingly used for multi-mission purposes such as maritime patrol and surveillance as well as maritime military exercises. In June 2016, the US Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) sent three B-52 Stratofortress bombers to take part in the joint NATO Baltic drills conducted at the military airport in Gloucestershire, the UK. Along with the US, 15 other NATO member countries including the UK, Finland, and Sweden also took part in the military drill.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
