Reading up: Industry revenue is forecast to rise in 2022-23, despite significant macroeconomic headwinds

The UK is home to some of the world's oldest and most esteemed book publishers. For instance, Cambridge University Press is the world's oldest publishing house (operating since 1584). The UK is the largest exporter of books in the world, owing to the global ubiquity of the English language, the reputation of the UK industry and the strength of local copyright law. However, the rise of e-books and online outlets altered the environment in which book publishers operate. Industry revenue is anticipated to rise at a compound annual rate of 0.6% over the five years through 2022-23, to reach £6.3 billion. Prior to 2020-21, revenue growth had been largely fuelled by a rebound in print sales, as printed books typically retail at a higher price than e-books, although e-books generally offer higher profit.

Businesses in this industry publish books, leaflets, atlases and maps in print, electronic or audio form. However, the industry excludes the activities of freelance journalists, the publication of advertising material and the publication of sheet music.

This report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecasts, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.
