Managing funds: Economic headwinds are squeezing industry revenue growth in the current year with people tightening purse strings

Overall, positive growth in both AUM and capital inflows in the years before the pandemic supported steady revenue growth by providing funds with additional capital to invest. While the COVID-19 outbreak shook markets, the UK and other advanced economies have broadly recovered to their pre-pandemic levels. Despite a strong recovery, investors remained wary over the past two years. UK-based investment funds were also hurt by the loss of passporting rights in the EU as, since Brexit, UK financial regulations may differ from those in the EU financial system, raising costs. Fund management activities revenue is forecast to climb at a compound annual rate of 2.3% to £28.5 billion over the five years through 2022-23, with the average profit margin set to reach 21.8%.
