Courtside seats: Revenue has ticked up as crowds flock to sporting events following the pandemic
Operators in the Online Event Ticket Sales industry act as agents for promoters and organisers of sporting, performing and other live events, selling tickets to these events on behalf of their clients. The industry generates revenue through fees charged for this service. Online ticket sellers heavily depend on the number of ticketed live events. The number of these events plummeted drastically during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the government mandated border closures, lockdowns and capacity limits. That's why revenue for online ticket sellers tanked in 2019-20 and 2020-21. But consumers gained significant confidence making online purchases during the pandemic, which turbocharged revenue growth as restrictions eased. Overall, industry revenue is expected to climb at an annualised 7.0% over the five years through 2022-23, to $413.8 million. This includes an anticipated surge of 69.9% in 2022-23.
Industry firms primarily sell tickets online to live events. Ticketed events include concerts, sporting events, live theatre and festivals. The industry also includes online ticket resellers, but does not include ticket sales at bricks-and-mortar outlets or sales made over the phone.
