Going swimmingly: Demand surges during the COVID-19 pandemic continue to support revenue

The last few years have been quite a journey for swimming pool and spa equipment stores. Before 2020, swimming pool and spa sales had been stalling, suffocated by a lack of discretionary income and volatile consumer sentiment, which made installations largely unattainable to the masses. The arrival of COVID-19 brought a new wave of interest in swimming pools and spas and a flood of orders. Consumers turned the negativity of COVID into a positive and spent holiday funds, which they couldn't use thanks to travel bands, on home renovation projects. Backyard also became a key benefactor in the surge of home renovation, with sales of swimming pool and spa posting record levels. Industry revenue is anticipated to grow at an annualised 7.9% over the five years through 2022-23 and is expected to total $1.7 billion in 2022-23, when revenue will jump by an estimated 6.7%. Profitability has fared well, rising on the back of strong order numbers and stores passing on higher purchase costs to maintain margins.

Industry products are sourced from domestic and international suppliers, and resold through bricks-and-mortar stores or online stores operated by industry players. Revenue derived from providing services, such as pool maintenance, is not included in the industry.
