As a result, savoury snacks posted another strong year, growing current value sales growth of 4% in 2016. The category has been a standout performer in packaged food, with value sales growing by at least 2% in every year since 2003 and increasing by 23% between 2011 and 2016.

Competitive Landscape

PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay division maintained its leading presence in savoury snacks with a value share of 38% in 2016. The company dominates potato chips, puffed snacks and tortilla chips with value shares of 60%, 71% and 75%, respectively, in 2016 with brands like Lay’s, Doritos, Cheetos, Tostitos, Fritos and Ruffles. These brands enjoy unparalleled equity and maintain their share through constant innovation. In 2016, however, Frito-Lay’s strongest performance was in popcorn, where its value share gained four percentage points to emerge as the market leader at 19%. Innovations like Smartfood Delight - which contains only 35 calories per cup - proved to be a popular snack for health-conscious shoppers. In February 2016, Frito-Lay introduced Smartfood Spicy Jalapeño Ranch to capture growing demand for spicy flavours.
