About Automated Container Terminal

Automated container terminals use container handling equipment that requires no human interaction and can be operated using hardware, software, and terminal operating systems (TOS). The first container terminal with full automation features became operational two decades ago. The initial automated container terminal was in the Netherlands, (ECT Delta). The container terminals are built with automated stacking cranes (ASCs) and some terminals use automated guided vehicle (AGV).

In the modern global economy, marine container terminals play a critical role in the international supply chain. To improve efficiency and reliability, operators are turning to automation both in terms of hardware and software. Operating an automated container terminal requires the integration of multiple sophisticated hardware and software systems. APAC countries, such as Malaysia, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, and EMEA countries like Qatar, Morocco, Oman, Norway, and Sweden, are undergoing a wave of infrastructure development and construction activities. Countries from the Americas, such as US, Brazil, Argentina, and Canada, are in the process of expanding port terminals and looking to upgrade and switch on to automation, either fully or partially. greenfield and brownfield projects will encourage the growth of the container terminal industry in these countries, and may incentivize the scope of automation projects. According to the report, innovations and modern developments in technology have steered numerous changes in the maritime industry. The introduction of navigation software, radio frequency identification (RFID) sensors, and other technicalities in remotely-operated cranes marks significant developments for automated handling equipment at ports. These have made navigation and cargo handling operations much easier and more efficient.

Further, the report states that rotterdam's recently opened (2015) automated container terminals face difficulty and challenges in meeting the productivity targets in their first full year of operation. At the beginning of 2016, European automated container terminals faced a bad start, and each container crane was delayed and stalled for more than 24 hours in January 2016. The longshoremen and the workers stopped working and protested job losses due to the accelerating pace of automation in every terminal. The delay in operation is always a major blow to terminal operators. The challenge may rise abruptly and the delay in operation can result from ongoing negotiations with labor unions (over guaranteed employment for 800-1000 of the 3500 container workers.) This situation stems from the automation of handling equipment, along with the use of automated vehicles in the terminal.
