About Remote I/O Modules

The ratio of input to output channels in a typical remote I/O module varies with application needs. The input and output signals to a remote I/O module can be analog, digital, or discrete. The digital and discrete input and output signal-based I/O modules are more popular than analog-based signals for all the three controller classes.

The analysts forecast the global remote I/O modules market to grow at a CAGR of 5.7% during the period 2017-2021.

New Report Released: – Global Remote I/O Modules Market 2017-2021

The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global remote I/O modules market: ABB, Emerson Electric, Rockwell Automation, and Siemens

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: Acromag, Advantech, B&R, Beckhoff Automation, Festo, GE, Hitachi, IDEC, Mitsubishi Electric, Eaton, National Instruments, OMRON, Parsec Automation, Pepperl + Fuchs, Turck Automation, Wago, Azbil, and Yokogawa

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “The major raw materials used in the manufacture of remote I/O modules and related accessories consisting of copper windings, electrical steel, and insulation materials. These account for more than 50% of the total manufacturing costs. Out of these raw materials, copper windings and electrical steel account for more than 40% of the total remote I/O module costs. The current decline in the costs of the above-mentioned two raw materials is likely to reduce manufacturing costs, resulting in a similar cost reduction for end-users, thus increasing their implementation.”

According to the report, smart grids are being increasingly deployed at a fast pace globally. Countries such as India, the US, China, France, Spain, and Germany are implementing their ambitious, smart grid plans. Smart grids include grid applications such as I/O modules and related equipment, smart energy meters IT, and other communication networks. These devices provide utilities with complete control and in managing digital assets present in the field. In 2015, Iberdrola, the largest utility in Spain, claimed that it was able to cut down the outage time from 45 minutes during January-July 2014 to 38 minutes in the same period in 2015 due to smart grid implementation. In Jamaica, the implementation of smart grid resulted in an average of 30% decrease in outages in 2015, when compared with 2014. In 2015, Florida Power & Light said that due to smart grid systems and its power delivery diagnostic center, it was able to avoid approximately 500,000 outages in 2014. Thus, effective implementation of smart grids is needed to counter the power crisis and increase grid reliability.

Further, the report states that earlier, industrial control systems such as PLCs, DCS, and SCADA were not connected to business systems such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) and customer relationship management (CRM) by any means of a standard network. However, nowadays these systems are connected to business systems through transmission control protocol (TCP)/IP networking. The integration of industrial automation software with business systems enables data exchange and leads to better decision making. Hence, industrial control systems are prone to cyber attacks from hostile governments, terrorist groups, disgruntled employees, and other malicious intruders. These systems are also vulnerable due to insecure remote connections I/O connections, standardization of technologies, and easy availability of technical information on the Internet. These conditions have facilitated potential hackers to intercept easily and issue unauthorized commands to control critical equipment.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
