About Biliary Stents

A biliary stent is a small plastic or metal tube that is shaped like a blood vessel that is used to open a passage between two hollow spaces in the body. It is an implantable device made up of materials such as nitinol, silicone, and cobalt-chromium alloys. The stent is designed in a manner that maintains the patency of stenotic vessels. The stent is used to make a pathway in the blocked bile duct to carry bodily fluids. It also enables the transfer of air in obstructed natural circulatory pathways and to treat palliative-stage cancers, strictures, and other medical conditions.

The analysts forecast the global biliary stents market to grow at a CAGR of 4.22% during the period 2017-2021.

New Report Released: – Global Biliary Stents Market 2017-2021

The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the Global Biliary Stents Market:

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “One trend in the market is the growing demand for bioabsorbable stents. The introduction of new stents with bioabsorbable scaffolds and biodegradable polymers are projected to increase the utilization of stents in biliary strictures. These stents have the potential to minimize the risks associated with durable polymer stents. This factor will result in a significant shift from conventional non-absorbable stents, such as plastic stents in the treatment of conditions, such as biliary strictures, obstructions caused by malignant or benign esophageal strictures, and obstructions of the bile duct with bioabsorbable stents over non-absorbable stents. Also, the usage of bioabsorbable stents prevents the need for an additional endoscopy procedure to remove stent during bile duct leaks, as the stent is absorbed into the tissue over the years. Owing to their potential, vendors are focused on developing self-expandable bioabsorbable stents. For instance, Boston Scientific uses biodegradable polymer (polylactic acid) for its WallFlex Biliary RX Stent, a bioabsorbable used for biliary walls. C. R. Bard's Bard Peripheral Vascular offers LifeStent and LifeStent XL Vascular biliary stent systems, which are bioabsorbable bare metal stents.”

According to the report, one driver in the market is the growing preference for MI procedures. There has been an increase in the popularity of MI procedures for the treatment of biliary diseases. These procedures have superseded traditional surgeries and are becoming increasingly popular as they deliver superior results with minimal complications. These techniques are increasingly used to manage diseases, such as gallbladder-related diseases, pancreas-related diseases, and liver-related diseases. Stenosis is the most commonly remedied condition through an MI procedure, which is performed using non-vascular stents. Surgeons can use imaging technology to guide instruments inside the body without resorting to surgery. the procedure is performed by making two small incisions in the groin through which a stent is placed at the site of a stricture with the help of special instruments and X-rays for guidance.

Further, the report states that one challenge in the market is the complications associated with biliary stents. Numerous complications are associated with the use of biliary stents. The procedure involves upper and lower endoscopy to evaluate the body, with the aid of fluoroscopy. The use of stents during the procedure can result in both minor and major complications. Major early-onset complications include perforation, stent migration, fever, intra-procedural complications, and in some cases, severe pain that requires hospitalization. Later complications involve distal stent migration, bleeding, stent obstruction, late perforation, and fistula formation. However, perforations and fistulas due to stenting are uncommon; early-onset chest pain remains a problem in most patients and persists in less than 13% of patients. Obstructions include tumor ingrowth or tumor overgrowth and food impaction. These complications vary in the degree of severity with different types of biliary stents used. Major complications included massive hemorrhage or death due to pulmonary embolism and minor complications such as fever and gastroesophageal reflux can be seen in most of the patients.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
