With the introduction of new technologies, either in the form of new circuit design, new algorithm, or new IP modules, the electronic design automation (EDA) tools need to be updated. By early identification of areas of design that have poor controllability and observability, the register transfer level (RTL) designers are making certain changes. It involves machine-to-machine (M2M) communication enabling devices to exchange and act upon information by eliminating human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. According to networking equivalent, Metcalfe's Law, formulated by Robert Metcalfe, the value of a telecommunications network is proportional to the square of the number of devices connected to it. We predict that the number of connected devices will be more than 4.9 billion connected devices by 2021. Thus, IoT is driving the demand for connected devices, which is driving the demand for SoCs used in these devices.

Further, the report states that one challenge in market is high cost of ATE. With the customized and specialized components, the test equipment is exceptionally reliable and provides accurate measurement results when needed. SoC test equipment performs two functions — to test if the device under test (DUT) is working properly and to detect the reason when the DUT is not working properly. The diagnosing of the issue can be difficult and can involve a high cost. ATE commonly reduces the failure rate for a similar group of components. A test equipment needs to test a wide variety of ICs. Both hardware and software components are designed to work over a wide range of operations. Purchasing all available options results in a higher cost of the test equipment. It is difficult to achieve increasing test performance requirements in a fast-moving environment where device performance continuously pushes the limits of ATE capabilities. Thus, this increases SoC test equipment discontinuance and testing costs. Many of the ATE provide functional test capabilities, which is an expensive way to test the entire operation of a chip in a package.
