Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “One trend in market is online and omni-channel trade. Omni-channel retailing has seen considerable adoption in the market, with more vendors realizing the vital role this channel plays in ensuring that a product gets maximum visibility. Omni-channel retailing uses a mix of distribution channels like retail stores, mobile stores, online stores, mobile app stores, and telephone sales for enhancing customer engagement. Retailers are focusing on integrating independent channels of sales. However, compared to developed countries, the adoption of this strategy is low in this country.”

According to the report, one driver in market is premiumization. Premiumization has been one of the reasons for the growth of the retail market in China and refers to a market strategy adopted by retailers to try to get customers to buy more expensive products by presenting a proposition with a higher value by cross selling and upselling of the product. One of the factors that has encouraged premiumization is the increasing consciousness about health and food safety among consumers. This has led to higher purchases of premium organic food products. With the growing population of upper-middle and upper-class consumers, there has been an increase in the demand for premium products in all the retail segments. Vendors like Costa Coffee and IKEA are selling their products with differential pricing strategy with respect to similar products available in the unorganized segment.

Further, the report states that one challenge in market is rampant counterfeiting in premium segment. The Chinese economy is plagued by the presence of counterfeit products across multiple product categories. Four out of every 10 products sold in China are estimated to be counterfeit. Over the past few years, counterfeits of leading global luxury brands have flooded the market in China. These products are priced much lower than the original products that they imitate to attract customers. Counterfeit cosmetics and personal care products are also mostly made of cheap ingredients and can lead to harmful side effects in users. Thus, counterfeit luxury products are causing a considerable dent in the market shares and reputations of leading popular brands.
