About Interventional Oncology

Interventional oncology procedures involve the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and cancer-related problems by using minimally invasive (MI) procedures performed under image guidance. Interventional oncology uses X-ray, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to guide accessories and instruments, such as ablation electrodes, biopsy needles, guidewires, and intravascular catheters that allow the treatment of a tumor located in some part of the body. Interventional oncology treatments are regularly carried out by interventional radiologists with appropriate settings and facilities. Interventional oncology is used to treat primary or metastatic cancer, which includes liver cancer, lung cancer, kidney cancer, bone cancer, breast cancer, and prostate and pancreatic cancer.

The analysts forecast the global interventional oncology market to grow at a CAGR of 11.17% during the period 2017-2021.

New Report Released: – Global Interventional Oncology Market 2017-2021

The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global interventional oncology market: BTG, Boston Scientific, Medtronic, Merit Medical, and TERUMO CORPORATION

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: Accuray, ALPINION MEDICAL SYSTEMS , AngioDynamics, AtriCure, Baylis Medical, BOVIE MEDICAL, Brainlab, BSD Medical Corporation, C. R. Bard, C2 Therapeutics, CardioFocus, Cook Medical, Eckert and Ziegler BEBIG, EDAP TMS, Elekta, Galil Medical, HealthTronics, INSIGHTEC, MedWaves, Mermaid Medical, Microsulis Medical, Monteris Medical, NeuWave Medical, Perseon, Profound Medical, Sirtex , Smith & Nephew, SonaCare Medical, and Varian Medical

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “The growing collaboration of vendors with image guidance providers is likely to have a positive impact on the market growth. This will boost the diagnosis as well as treatment of cancer and cancer-related problems, thereby improving patient care. For instance, in June 2016, Koninklijke Philips entered a new research program with the Yale School of Medicine to innovate in interventional oncology procedures. This collaboration involved disease localization and quantification, treatment planning, and guidance and assessment. Earlier in May 2014, Koninklijke Philips, in collaboration with leading clinicians and partners such as BTG, launched EmboGuide, an advanced product in interventional oncology, which is used to treat difficult-to-reach tumors in individuals who are deemed unsuitable for surgery. Subsequently, in February 2016, Koninklijke Philips and BTG announced that the first patient had been treated by its image-guided LC Bead LUMI. Also, Siemens Healthcare is one company that is focused on providing integrated products, which include both interventional oncology as well as image-guided solutions. Image-guided solutions with interventional oncology help to reduce risks of complications from open surgery and reduce the hospital stay for patients. In addition, the growing research activities to offer image-guided solutions in interventional oncology will further drive the market growth. For instance, in July 2016, a research study stated that video-assisted surgery and real-time imaging guidance can be integrated for the effective removal of small lung cancers. This scenario is likely to drive the market growth in the future.”

According to the report, the increasing cancer population is expected to drive the market growth. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Lung, liver, stomach, colorectal, breast, and esophageal cancers are prevalent among the population worldwide. According to the CDC in 2014, the number of adults diagnosed with cancer in the US stood at 20.3 million. The number of patient visits to physicians' offices for cancer stood at 20.1 million in 2014. Also, according to some research findings,,the number of individuals diagnosed with cancer reached approximately 14.5 to 15 million in 2014 and is expected to reach 19 million by 2024. The majority of cancers at chronic stages cannot be treated with conventional drugs. This is expected to increase the demand for interventional oncology procedures, such as tissue ablation and embolization, thereby driving the market growth.

Further, the report states that although the popularity of interventional oncology procedures is growing steadily, many patients, especially in developing countries, are reluctant to adopt these treatments because of the fear of complications related to these procedures. Risks involved in interventional oncology procedures include infection, thermal damage, and bleeding; in some cases, it can even be fatal. The use of energy-based procedures involves risks and complications not only to patients but also to physicians and operators. These devices emit hazardous radiation that can have serious effects and sometimes be the cause of death. High-power energy HIFU and radioisotopes used in SIRT procedures can damage the sensitive part of the eye and the skin. Anesthesia complications, blood clots, allergic reactions, adverse effects due to undiagnosed medical issues, and injury to blood vessels and nerves are some of the complications that can arise after an energy-based ablation procedure. Thermal damage is due to the continuous wave nature of the conventional CO₂exposure. Erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) was developed to lessen the thermal damage to treated skin tissue. More research is needed to develop further application that ensures complete elimination of thermal damage to treated skin tissue and other tissues in the body. Hence, energy-based devices must be used in an isolated and controlled environment to avoid unnecessary damage. The complications associated with tissue ablation may hinder market growth.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
