About Fuel Cells

Fuel cells produce electricity by utilizing the power generated by electrochemical reactions, and convert potential chemical energy into electrical and heat energy. They use external sources of chemical energy, such as hydrogen and oxygen, to produce energy. Electrochemical reactions in the fuel cells oxidize hydrogen, which reacts with oxygen to form water, releasing electrons that flow through the external circuit as electric current.

The analysts forecast the global fuel cells market for industrial and military applications to grow at a CAGR of 14.05% during the period 2017-2021.

New Report Released: – Global Fuel Cells Market for Industrial and Military Applications 2017-2021

The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global fuel cells market for industrial and military applications: Ballard Power Systems, Bloom Energy, NUVERA FUEL CELLS, and SFC Energy.

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: ACAL Energy, Acumentrics, Altergy, SOLIDpower, Ceres Power, Delphi Automotive, Doosan Fuel Cell, Electrochem, EnergyOr Technologies, Enocell, FuelCell Energy, Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies, Hydrogenics, Intelligent Energy, Neah Power Systems, Oorja Protonics, Panasonic, PLUG POWER, REDOX POWER SYSTEMS, Shanghai EVERPOWER Technologies, Toshiba Fuel Cell Power Systems, and USSI.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “One trend in market is increase in R&D investment and activities. Companies are making heavy investments in R&D in the fuel cell industry. Many universities and government organizations are engaged in research and demonstration projects of new technologies in the industry. For instance, the National Energy Foundation is working with New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) in the UK on various fuel cell research projects. NEDO has 11 fuel cell projects involved in the development and validation of polymer electrolyte fuel cell technology for small-scale systems, hydrogen technology, SOFC for large-scale systems, and infrastructure development. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory, US, has a hydrogen and fuel cell research section dedicated to addressing the national issues of fuel cell technologies. It focuses on projects related to fuel cell technology validation, safety code, standard analysis, hydrogen production, delivery, and storage.”

According to the report, one driver in market is growing demand for efficient and cleaner technologies. Manufacturing facilities require constant power to have a continuous process for efficient operation of the plant. This has resulted in facility managers to use fossil fuel generators as backup in the event of an outage. However, the growing demand for electricity, as well as the awareness about using cleaner energy forms, is driving the market for alternate technology sources such as fuel cells. Climate change mitigation techniques involve the use of cleaner fuels to produce electricity. Fuel cells are regarded as an efficient and reliable technology that can generate power and supply heat where necessary. Fuel cells are scalable in nature, their capacity can range from kilowatts to megawatts, allowing them to be used for backup in facilities such as manufacturing plants, warehouses, and primary power in off-grid networks to supply power.

Further, the report states that one challenge in market is uncertainties associated with low crude oil prices. Global oil prices have witnessed steep declines in 2015 and 2016. The recent crash in crude prices, which saw the price fall from highs of $ 100 in mid-2014 to around $ 28 in early 2016, only reinforces the volatility crude market is subject to. This remarkable decline in oil prices is attributed to the systemic demand-supply imbalance in the global crude markets. Moreover, this has made investing in alternate fuel vehicles less attractive. While natural gas still holds significant price advantage over oil on Btu basis, the continuous decline in price might result in lower sales and deferred infrastructure investments.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
