Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “One trend in market is deployment of sensors in robotic milking units. The main objective of regulating and maintaining milk quality and safety is to ascertain that abnormal milk does not enter a raw milk collection system. Abnormal milk is defined as one that is obtained from an infectious or sick animal and is potentially infected with antigens. In traditional milking methods, the farmers visually inspect the animal during udder and teat preparation and while attaching the milking unit. In contrast, automated robotic milking units are deploying smart sensors that can analyze the milk quality and flag for abnormalities in the product.”

According to the report, one driver in market is maximizing profits in dairy farm operations. In order to increase profits in the dairy industry, the daily milk production must be maximized. It has been observed that milking of herds carried out by automated robotic systems has a 5-10% higher productivity over the traditional milking process. In contrast to the traditional milking process involving human labor attending to one animal at a time, robotic systems, similar to multiple-stall and rotary units can handle several animals, thereby enhancing the productivity and yield. With relatively lower labor requirements in automated processes, dairy farms opting for robotic milking can increase their productivity and output to reflect greater profits in operations. Milk production and labor charges are the major cost drivers for the dairy industry and controlling these can lead to a profitable business outcome for the industry.

Further, the report states that one challenge in market is high initial investment. As robotics is a developing field and involves the use of sensors, software, and advanced technologies, the prices of professional service robots are considerably high and involve a high initial one-time investment. Milking robots, for instance, that can on an average milk 60-70 cows a day, cost around $210,000, with additional costs that include installations and other necessary infrastructure requirements for robotic housing. Availability of a high capital budget in large-scale farms makes it easier for them to adopt robotic technologies on a wide scale. On the other hand, majority of dairy farms in some parts of Europe (France, Spain) and majority of APAC (India, China) find it difficult to invest a substantial amount along with frequent maintenance costs, which may go up to $8,000 per machine annually. Small-scale and medium-scale businesses on implementing milking robots find it extremely difficult to recover the cost during the initial years and run into a loss. With economies of scale and higher adoption of milking robots, globally, the average implementation and maintenance costs are expected to come down. However, in the present scenario, it deters small and medium farms from the adoption of robots.
