An unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV), or an attack drone, usually carries aircraft ordnance such as missiles, bombs, and laser weapons. Earlier, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were primarily used for surveillance and patrolling. With the growing need for operational requirements, UAVs were armed and converted into UCAVs. Broadly, UCAVs are used for surveillance, direction of artillery fire, gathering electronic intelligence (ELINT) information, lasing targets for fighter aircraft, and for post-strike damage assessment. While several nations operate unarmed UAVs, as of 2016, only the US, Turkey, Israel, Italy, Iran, China, India, and Pakistan had manufactured UCAVs.

The analysts forecast the global UCAVs market to grow at a CAGR of 3.03% during the period 2017-2021.

New Report Released: - Global UCAV Market 2017-2021

The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global UCAV market: BAE Systems, Boeing, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Israel Aerospace Industries, and Northrop Grumman

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: Dassault Aviation, Denel Dynamics, Elbit Systems, and Lockheed Martin

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “UAVs are increasingly becoming a key asset in national security countermeasure operations. Also, along with the rapid technological advancements in the military electronics segment, these unmanned airborne platforms are getting integrated into Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance systems and into weapons that support those operations. UCAVs are capable of deploying missiles, bombs, and precision-guided munitions. Thus, nations are increasing the development of UCAVs with long-range strike capabilities.”

According to the report, UCAVs have gained a wide-scale popularity in the recent years owing to their advanced technology. Artificial intelligence technology has developed to a level where the deployment of autonomous systems has become equivalent to the new revolution in warfare. Thus, the accelerating need for advanced autonomous technology is driving small economy countries to focus on new developments and procurements of UCAVs. Additionally, the potential applications of UCAVs in urban areas for security and surveillance operations has propelled the countries to invest in this sector significantly.

Further, the report states that keeping pace with the development of UAVs, countries across the globe are simultaneously developing anti-drone defense systems and mechanisms. Drones used by one nation are always a threat to other nations, and in order to have an effective defense system, nations are focusing on the development of anti-drone technology. Boeing recently tested a 10 kW anti-drone laser cannon that is capable of shooting down drones. The company is planning to enhance the laser power from 10 kW to 60 kW in order to deploy it with the military. Likewise, in 2015, the US Navy also tested a similar weapon that can shoot down drones and expected that these lasers will be mounted on ships and land vehicles, such as trucks. In 2015, an Israel defense manufacturer demonstrated an iron beam anti-drone laser system at South Korea defense technology expo.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
