This latest update in this series of reports summarises the trends which were on show at the European fabric fairs for the spring/summer 2018 season. The author of the report visited Munich Fabric Start, Première Vision Fabrics and Milano Unica where she interviewed exhibitors and found out first-hand which trends were proving to be the most popular. Overall, the mood at the fairs was positive, and there was a strong accent on creativity, new designs and innovation resulting from the application of ever more creative fabric techniques. There was an overwhelming impression of lightness and transparency, and this had been achieved through the use of a variety of techniques — including burn-out printing and the use of fil coupé effects. Cotton and natural fibres were important, and had been used in blends with other fibres such as viscose or lyocell. Patterns were also prominent, and key print themes included animals, florals, geometrics and the use of indigo tones. Fancy tweed fabrics maintained their popularity, and there were also several innovative fabrics on display for use in contemporary outerwear.
