About Pulp

Wood pulp or pulp is a fibrous material, which is mainly composed of water, cellulose fibers, lignin, and hemicelluloses. Cellulose fibers are the key components of pulp and are essential for the production of paper. Lignin, on the contrary, is a type of polymer that binds cellulose fibers together. Hemicellulose, like cellulose, is a carbohydrate-based polymer that binds with cellulose fibers. These elements combine to make paper strong.

The analysts forecast the global pulp market to grow at a CAGR of 2.61% during the period 2017-2021.

New Report Released: - Global Pulp Market 2017-2021

The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global pulp market: APP, ARAUCO, Fibria, Suzano Pulp and Paper, and UPM.

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: Altri, APRIL Group, Ballarpur Industries, Burgo Group, Canfor, Catalyst Paper, Clearwater Paper, Eldorado Brasil, Heinzel Holding, and Mercer International.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “One trend in the market is trend of using fluffy pulp due to increased absorbency. Diapers (baby and adult) and hygiene sanitary pads for women have gained a great significance in the global market. This is due to the awareness of safety and health practices. These products are manufactured from fluffy pulp, which is a long fiber made of soft wood. Fluffy pulp increases the absorbency of liquid and semi-solids, which prevents leaking.”

According to the report, one driver in the market is increased consumption of chemical wood pulp. Chemical wood pulp is a lignocellulosic fibrous material, which is produced by separating cellulose fibers from wood. Softwood fibers are fibers generated from angiosperm trees. These trees have naked seeds that have flowers. They have long fibers without any pores and are 3 mm and 410 microns in length and breadth, respectively. This separates lignin from fibers. Hardwood comes from deciduous trees and has libriform fibers. They are 1 mm and 20 micrometers in length and breadth, respectively.

Further, the report states that one challenge in the market is instances of forest fires. Pulp is a mature industry, which uses trees to derive raw materials. A tree used in production of pulp has 25% as branches and 75% as trunk wood or logs). A wood log has 27% lignin (glue) and 73% fiber (that goes into paper). Every tree requires 130 gallons of water for growth and 50 gallons of water for being processed into paper. In an average 17 trees are required to produce one metric ton of paper. The production of white office paper requires around 24 trees and newsprint requires around 12 trees along with 25 metric cubes of water, 10,061 kWh of electricity, and 680 gallons of oil.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
