About Direct-to-consumer Genetic Testing

DTC genetic testing is a service that is offered by companies, retail, and clinical diagnostic laboratories directly to the consumer. DTC genetic testing services are marketed to consumers through television and print and online advertisements. DTC genetic testing is widely adopted owing to increasing awareness about gene sequencing for the early detection of diseases. However, in many countries, companies also conduct gene sequencing for matchmaking, to ascertain ancestry, and to check the vitamin level in the body.

The analysts forecast the global direct-to-consumer genetic testing market to grow at a CAGR of 11.68% during the period 2017-2021.

New Report Released: – Global Direct-to-consumer Genetic Testing Market 2017-2021

The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global direct-to-consumer genetic testing market: 23andMe, LabCorp, Myriad Genetics, and Quest Diagnostics

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: African Ancestry, Alpha Biolaboratories, Ambry Genetics, AncestrybyDNA, Anglia DNA Services, Canadian DNA Services, Centrillion Technology, Color Genomics, Counsyl, Dante Labs, DNA Diagnostics Center, DNA Family Check, DNA4Life, DNA Services of America, EasyDNA, Full Genomes, 24genetics, Gene By Gene, GHC GENETICS, Genetic Health, IDENTIGENE, IntelliGenetics, Invitae, Living DNA, Mapmygenome, MyHeritage, Pathway Genomics, Positive Bioscience, SureGenomics, Shuwen Health Sciences, Sonora Quest Laboratories, Test Me DNA, VCGS, Walk-In Lab, and Xcode.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “The latest trend gaining momentum in the market is Development of online applications to serve customer needs. To compete with existing companies, new entrants are developing applications that can help them reach out to physicians. The growing adoption of Android has increased the adoption of applications such as KolGene, which acts as a mediator between physicians and clinical laboratories. Hence, Helix, a subsidiary of Illumina, will become a competitor for Tier 1 DTC genetic testing companies such as 23andMe and Quest Diagnostics. Illumina’s continuous focus to develop advanced next-generation sequencers and its brand recognition can increase the adoption of Helix in the future.”

According to the report, one of the major drivers for this market is Chronic disorders in adult population. People between the ages of 18 to 49 are susceptible to chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and type 2 diabetes. A study conducted by the CDC in 2016 found that in 2012, around 117 million adults were suffering from one or more chronic diseases such as heart disease or cancer. A combined study conducted by the Section of General Internal Medicine at the VA Boston Healthcare System and other institutions in 2013 on 521 adults found that respondents who had high phenotypic diabetic risk were aware of genetic testing.

Further, the report states that one of the major factors hindering the growth of this market is Strict guidelines by FDA and FTC in US. To order a DTC genetic test, people need not provide information related to their medical history, pre- and post-test counseling, or other medical components. DTC genetic testing provides results with the possibility of developing gene-related diseases in the future. Hence, there is no direct connection between people and genetic counselors. Also, the Government of the US has observed that there is high adoption of DTC genetic testing in the country, which encouraged the FDA to develop strict guidelines to regulate DTC genetic testing to increase patient safety. In November 2015, the FDA sent warning letters to few companies based on tests.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
