About Battery Separator

A battery separator is a material placed between the battery’s cathode and anode. Cathode and anode are the building blocks of a battery. The separator has a permeable membrane that is moistened with electrolyte and acts as a catalyst for the movement of the ions from the anode to the cathode when it is discharged and from the cathode to the anode when it is charged. These ions are atoms that have gained or lost electrons to become electrically charged and are used for closing the circuit when current is passed through them. The main function of the separator is to maintain a distance between the two electrodes to prevent short circuits while allowing the movement of ions.

According to the report, one of the major drivers for this market is Lead-acid battery cost benefit compared with other batteries. Despite the introduction of lithium-ion batteries, the lead-acid battery has been able to retain its market share in motive, stationary, and automotive batteries. Lead-acid batteries offer high cranking current, which is ideal for stationary applications such as UPS. UPS is one of the segments contributing to the growth of stationary batteries. In UPS, many cells are grouped parallelly and connected serially. As many cells are used in these batteries, they require separators to enhance performance and reduce short circuit. These separators are placed in between every two cells. Every battery has its own set of current that it can produce. For instance, a 500 milliamp-hour battery cannot produce 20,000 milliamp-hour current.

Further, the report states that one of the major factors hindering the growth of this market is Low ionic conductivity. Owing to the polymer's crystalline phase, there is low ionic conductivity for solid polymer electrodes. This affects the transportation of ions. This ionic transport is mostly affected in crystalline phase due to slow polymer chain dynamics compared with the amorphous phase. In amorphous phase, there is higher chain movement making way for ions. Owing to high crystallinity, there is high internal resistance for lithium-ion batteries, which leads to low charge-discharge capacity. If the crystallinity is not decreased, it affects the battery's operating temperature range (104°F-176°F) for low conductivity, thereby reducing the battery life. There are many techniques used to reduce the crystallinity such as the addition of plasticizers and use of copolymer structures.
