Summary

Saudi Arabia’s GDP increased from $379 Billion in 2000, to $687.7 Billion in 2016, at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 3.8%. It is forecast to reach $752.7 Billion by 2020, growing at a CAGR of 1.5% from 2016. The Saudi Arabian economy is largely dependent on oil exports. Industrialization has been progressing slowly, due to a lack of transparency in governance, a cumbersome bureaucracy, a shortage of skilled human resources, and political instability in neighboring countries - which have created an uncertain investment climate.

Thermal energy sources currently dominate Saudi Arabia’s power mix, with a share of 99.97% of the total power. Of the thermal energy, gas-based thermal capacity comprises 51.08%, and oil-based capacity holds 48.89%. The remaining share of the power mix, at 0.03%, is from solar photovoltaic (PV).

Annual electricity consumption increased from 114.2 terawatt hours (TWh) in 2000, to 302.9 TWh in 2016, at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 6.3%. This increase was due to both economic growth and population growth. Annual electricity generation also increased, from 126.2 TWh in 2000, to 354.2 TWh in 2016 at a CAGR of 6.7% - produced almost entirely from thermal sources, as renewable generation is still at a nascent stage.

Saudi Arabian government’s decision to increase the share of renewable sources in the power mix, the King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (KA-CARE) - a government co-ordinating agency - released a white paper in 2012 detailing a time-bound plan for the introduction of a competitive procurement process for renewable energy. This was prompted by exponential growth in electricity demand, which made it necessary to use increasingly large volumes of Saudi Arabia’s produced oil for power generation, rather than export.
