The global market for agricultural fumigants is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.2% during 2016-2021 forecast period in order to reach a market value of $2230 million by 2021. Fumigants are defined as pest control products that kills pests by suffocation and kills them from within. Agricultural fumigants are widely used in pest control of soil, food grains and stored produce. It is also used processing of goods to be imported or exported to prevent transfer of exotic organisms.

Increasing demand for agricultural produce owing to growing global population, concern over increasing post-harvest loss and adoption of improved agricultural practices are the major parameters helping in the growth of agricultural fumigants market. While regions like Asia-Pacific and South America are expected to provide better growth opportunities, stringent product regulations and product application issues may hinder the market growth.

Global Agricultural Fumigants market is segmented on the basis of type, application, form, crop application and geographical reach. By product type, the market is segmented into Methyl Bromide, Chloropicrin, Phosphine, Metam Sodium, 1,3-Dichloropropene and others. While methyl bromide accounts for majority of market share, phosphine is expected to grow at a highest CAGR during 2016-2021. Phosphine based fumigants are mostly used in grain storage systems. Out of soil and warehouse application of fumigants, warehouse usage holds majority of demand. Soil fumigation helps in weed control and eliminating parasitic attacks by nematodes. Liquid form leads the market demand with largest share in 2015 which is then followed by gaseous form. The market is further explained on the basis of application in major agricultural crops and non-crops.

North America is the largest market for agricultural fumigants accounting for around 35-40% of the market share followed by Europe. The region is expected to grow at the steady CAGR during the forecast period. Europe is the second largest market and the market is expected to expand with increased supply of quality products from key players. Accounting for around one-fifth of the global market share, Asia-Pacific market is projected to show highest growth potential during next five years. The region’s demand for fumigants is led by countries such as China, India, and Japan among others. Fumigants are in nascent stage in South America. Brazil is the major market and holds around 60% of the market share. Changing farming practices, better storage technology and measures for post-harvest loss control would help the market demand to grow in these developing countries.

The key players in the market have been following expansion strategy to explore new regions by means of acquisitions, new product launches, expansion & investments, agreements, partnerships, collaborations, and joint ventures. Investment in research and development of cheap effective products is another strategy adopted by market leaders. The major players in the market are DOW Chemical Company, ADAMA Agricultural Solution Ltd., BASF SE, E.I. DuPont De Nemrous & Company, Syngenta AG and FMC Corporation etc.
