About Aircraft Fuel Systems

A fuel system consists of pumps, storage tanks, filters, valves, fuel lines, metering and monitoring devices, strainers, selector valve, and pressure relief valves. It pumps and manages the flow of aviation fuel to the engine and auxiliary power unit (APU). Fuel systems differ significantly based on the aircraft performance in which they are installed. For instance, aircraft with single engine piston has a simple fuel system but a tanker, such as KC-135, is not only able to manage its own fuel but also provides fuel to other aircraft.

Airbus has been progressing steadily with additive manufacturing and its implementation in aircraft. 3D-printed plastic parts have already been incorporated in the Airbus A350 jet. In the new Airbus A350 XWB, the company plans to integrate parts printed with titanium.”

According to the report, one driver in the market is need for aircraft weight reduction. Fuel roughly accounts for 30% of an airlines' operational cost and, therefore, the demand for fuel-efficient aircraft is high. Aircraft manufacturers are increasingly integrating advanced lightweight materials (like composites) in both structural and semi-structural components to reduce the weight of aircraft and consequently, improve fuel efficiency. Composites allow a longer flight range and greater payload capacity. They exhibit high strength-to-weight ratio and provide a weight saving of 20%-50% in comparison to metal alloys.

Further, the report states that one challenge in the market is water ingress from fuel tanks. The most common cause of water ingress in fuel tanks is the dripping fuel covers during rain, which leads to compression inside the tank as water mixes with fuel. To address such challenges, Airbus Operations filed a patent on a method of introducing dehumidified air into aircraft fuel tank through a ventilation system. The process involves bringing atmospheric air from the vent in contact with a refrigerating element to remove the moisture from the air. This will affect the life of the fuel systems due to the entry of the water molecules into the fuel tanks.
