About Polyethylene

Polyethylene (PE) or polythene refers to a polymer of ethylene, particularly belonging to lightweight thermoplastics that are partially crystalline in nature and are resistant to moisture and chemicals. Polyethylene is the most commonly used plastic globally. It is used in the production of products ranging from shopping and food wrap bags to automobile fuel tanks and detergent bottles. Polyethylene can be spun or slit to form synthetic fibers or can be modified to assume the elastic properties pertaining to rubber.

The analysts forecast the global polyethylene market to grow at a CAGR of 3.78% during the period 2017-2021.

New Report Released: - Global Polyethylene Market 2017-2021

The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global polyethylene market: BASF, China Petrochemical, DuPont, Exxon Mobil, LyondellBasell Industries Holdings, SABIC, Sumitomo Chemical, and The Dow Chemical Company.

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: Borealis, Chevron Phillips Chemical Company, Royal DSM, Formosa Plastics, INEOS, National Petroleum Company (Iran), NOVA Chemicals, Reliance Industries, USI, and Versalis.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “The latest trend gaining momentum in the market is New developments in application of polyethylene. The global polyethylene market has experienced new developments in the type of polyethylene produced due to the use of new techniques in production. An emerging trend in the market is the application of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) in industrial applications, including bottling and automotive sectors. UHMWPE is also known as high-modulus polyethylene (HMPE).”

According to the report, one of the major drivers for this market is Growing sectoral demand for use of polyethylene products. The global polyethylene market is driven by the increasing demand for plastic, which translates into growth opportunities for the market. Countries in Asia, such as India and China, witnesses the highest demand for plastics globally. India has witnessed rapidly increasing demand for plastic for electronic products. In India, the demand for electronics grows at an estimated rate of 17% annually. The country witnessed a revenue generation of approximately $134 billion in 2015, from $63 billion in 2010. On the other hand, the country lagged on the supply of electronics, reflecting an annual shortfall of approximately $42 billion in 2015.

Further, the report states that one of the major factors hindering the growth of this market is Volatility in prices of raw materials coupled with product commoditization. Some of the raw materials required to produce polyethylene include ethane, propane, naphtha, and natural gas. Fluctuations in prices of these raw materials have hampered the price of polyethylene. The price of crude oil has witnessed a downward trend for most part of 2017. The price of crude oil in December 2016 was $53.08 per barrel. The price dipped down to $45.78 in June 2017. On the other hand, prices of natural gas are subject to fluctuations. The average price of natural gas in January 2016 was $2.92 Btu and the price in January 2017 reflected a value of $3.29 Btu.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
