About Military Heads-up Display (HUD)
HUD systems use a transparent display screen that is placed above the aircraft controls at the pilot’s head level. The required mission information is displayed on the transparent screen so that the display is overlaid on the pilot’s normal cockpit view. This allows pilots to keep their heads up and their eye sights along the flight trajectory, even while looking at the information displayed on the HUDs. As pilots need not have to repeatedly change his/her line of sight between display panels and flight trajectory, HUD has reduced the operator’s reaction time and enhanced their split-second decision-making capability.
The analysts forecast the global military heads-up display (HUD) market to grow at a CAGR of 9.6% during the period 2017-2021.

New Report Released: - Global Military Heads-up Display (HUD) Market 2017-2021
The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global military heads-up display (HUD) market: BAE Systems, Elbit Systems, Honeywell International, Rockwell Collins, and Saab.
Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: Dassault Aviation, Esterline Technologies, and Thales Group.
Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “One trend in the market is emergence of DLE technology for HUDs. HUDs are becoming a fundamental part of almost all military programs, including those for military platforms like vehicles and aircraft and wearable gears for dismounted soldiers. The traditional HUD designs incorporate many heavy, degradable, and maintenance-intensive components that increase the complexities of military programs.”
According to the report, one driver in the market is enhancement in situational awareness with integration of night vision in HUDs. The integration of night vision technologies in HUDs provide operators with enhanced situational awareness. Night vision HUD systems use infrared sensors, which are built into the military platforms or a soldier’s wearable gear, and synchronize the image from the sensors onto the HUD. This integration overlays the imagery from thermal infrared sensors onto the transparent screen of a HUD to provide operators with a monochromatic and illuminated view of the surroundings.
Further, the report states that one challenge in the market is visual clutter on HUDs. HUDs change the way operators see their surroundings based on the visual imagery and information displayed on the HUDs. As HUDs are placed along the line of sight of their operators, the displayed imagery and information gets overlaid into the view of the surroundings. Therefore, one of the biggest challenges of designing and using HUDs is to find the balance between giving operators the maximum information they need for a mission success without obscuring their vision of the mission environment.
The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
