An accelerometer is an electromechanical device and is mainly used for the measurement of acceleration, due to sudden impact, and vibration. The impact may be a large acceleration over a short period, whereas vibration is a small and repeatable acceleration. Accelerometers are used in aircraft and ships to their measure the velocity, position, and acceleration. These are used on inertial navigation system (INS), inertial reference unit (IRU), inertial reference system (IRS), or air data inertial reference system (ADIRS).
