The dehumidifier market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.82% to reach US$3,543.532 million by 2025, from US$,523.048 million in 2019

Dehumidifiers are electrical appliances that maintain the level of humidity in the air and make the living place comfortable. Electric refrigeration dehumidifiers are the most commonly used dehumidifiers.

A major reason for the growing demand for dehumidifiers is the rising number of allergy triggers such as dust mites and mold that remain active in the humid atmosphere

The demand for humidifiers is rising as allergy triggers are quite active in humid environments. Dehumidifiers make enclosures less hospitable to the allergy-causing germs. People also prefer them as they facilitate easy and quick drying of clothes, keep food fresh for a longer duration, reduces the probability of corrosion of electronic devices like computers. These factors are driving the growth of this market. Furthermore, rising awareness of respiratory diseases caused by long exposure in humid environments is also expected to make this product a lucrative investment.

The increasing construction and development of less ventilated or closed buildings such as commercial offices, apartments or complexes by cutting down of the trees is also a major demand driver of dehumidifiers

Deforestation and pollution are the leading factors responsible for climate change and global warming. In 2010, the United States had 252 Million Hectare meter (Mhm) of natural forest whereas, by 2018, there was a loss of 1.66 Million hectares meter of natural forest which equaled to 547Mt of carbon dioxide emissions. China, on the other hand, lost 9.42Mhm of tree cover which was a decline of 5.8% from 2001 to 2018. From 2001 to 2018, Malaysia lost 7.73 Mhm of tree cover, which was a 26% decrease since 2000 which was equivalent to 3.38 Gt of carbon dioxide emissions (Source: Global Forest Watch). According to the World Bank, the global forest cover is falling at a rapid rate. The forest cover in 2008 was around 40,225,008.7 square km in 2008. In 2016, it reduced to 39,958,245.9 square km. This entails a need for deploying dehumidifiers to control the moisture of the air. Apart from this, the type of equipment used in several offices and industries such as computers, printing equipment requires the use of dehumidifiers to control the moisture content of the room. The application of dehumidifiers in food packaging industries is also fuelling the demand for dehumidifiers. The rising number of storage facilities is also anticipated to make this market grow during the forecast period.

Technological advancements in the development of sophisticated dehumidifiers are expanding the scope of this market

With more people trying to live better and comfortable lives, the demand for HVAC equipment is rising. In places with high humidity, dehumidifiers are preferred in conjunction with air-conditioners. Liquid desiccant dehumidification technology in air-conditioning systems has become attractive due to the better utilization of low-grade heat. This allows independent control of temperature and humidity. Apart from this, several new state-of-the-art versions of dehumidifiers are getting launched by big players in the market with novel features, such as light sensors. Companies have launched dehumidifiers for serving nature as well. For instance, in November 2017, Quest Launched First 500-pint Dehumidifier specifically designed for Cannabis growers to fill a gap in environmental control technology.

Some of the market developments are as follows:
  • In August 2019, SHARP launched two air purifiers cum dehumidifiers named DW-J20FM-W and DW-E16FA-W, which are equipped with Ion Generator Technology that eliminates airborne mold, viruses, and bacteria. They are also capable of running on home invertors and have features like child lock, dust, and light sensors.
  • In February 2018, Voltas launched India’s first window AC with inverter technology incorporating an active dehumidifier.
  • In September 2017, Danish HVAC manufacturer Dantherm acquired German dehumidifier manufacturer Aerial. This was the fifth acquisition made by this firm in the previous two years. Aerial majorly serves construction and water damage restoration industry, water management sector and the refrigeration and air conditioning sector.
  • In March 2017, De’Longhi, a leading brand in portable heating and cooling equipment launched four new additions to its portfolio of home comfort products. The Pinguino EX Series portable air-conditioners can cool, dehumidify and have a fan option at different speeds.

However, the dehumidifier market is faced by certain constraints that are expected to hamper its growth

The dehumidifier is to be cleaned regularly according to the recommended cleaning duration by the manufacturer. Otherwise, the contaminated air released by the dehumidifier may affect the health adversely. Deficient levels of humidity are also believed to make people more prone to cold and flu. This might have a slight negative influence on the growth of this market. Also, the awareness about the existence of dehumidifiers is also low which requires more marketing of the products by the company.

Geographically, the Asia Pacific region is expected to witness a high CAGR in the Dehumidifier market due to rising incomes and electricity consumption of the people

Rapid urbanization in conjunction with rising incomes is increasing the proclivity of the people towards buying Air-conditioning equipment. The application of the Dehumidifier will be maximum in the commercial sector over the forecast period. This region has a plethora of cities with extreme humid weather, for instance, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Melbourne. These are expected to fuel the growth of this market. As a matter of fact, electric power consumption in East Asia and the Pacific is on a constant rise and is expected to follow the pattern throughout the forecast period. The electricity consumption was around 3,677.517 kWh per capita in the year 2014 as compared to 2,113.364 kWh per capita in the year 2004.

The American region is expected to hold a significant share of the Dehumidifier market owing to the presence of a large number of players of this market and also partly due to the developed nature of this region. The presence of humid cities in this region such as California, Las Vegas is also expected to be a major reason for the high usage of dehumidifiers in this region.
