Breaking News: Aarti Industries diversified into toluene-based derivatives, in 2016, by setting up 30,000 tons per annum (TPA) greenfield capacity at Jhagadia (Gujarat). The project is expected to commence operations in the second half of the FY17, and achieve the capacity utilization of 25-30% and 70-80% by FY19.

The global toluene market is expected to be valued at USD XX million in 2017 and projected to reach USD XX million by 2022, registering a CAGR of XX% during 2017-2022 (the forecast period).

Toluene, formerly known as toluol and methylbenzene, is an aromatic hydrocarbon, which is used as a solvent and an industrial feedstock. It is mainly obtained from petroleum and coal tar. Toluene exhibits beta-oxidant, anesthetic, depressant and neurotransmitter functions. It is used in the explosives industry to manufacture explosive compounds, such as trinitrotoluene (TNT). In addition, toluene is used in industries as a solvent in paint thinners, glues, nail polish removers, and in the manufacture of hair dyes and cosmetic nail products.

The increased use of toluene as an industrial solvent is driving the market. Demand growth is also being witnessed in the petrochemical industry for the manufacture of agrochemicals, synthetic fibers, dyes, elastomers, and nail paints. However, environmental regulations associated with toluene is a constraint, especially, for the emerging economies. Moreover, the increasing demand for other aromatic products is expected to hinder the market.

The global toluene market is segmented into derivative and application. Based on derivative, the use of toluene in the production of benzene and xylene held the largest market share. In the application segment, the blending sub-segment is expected to witness a growth, due to the growing demand for gasoline blending to improve the octane number of fuels.

Geographically on the basis of consumption, the market has been segmented into Asia-Pacific, North America, Europe, South America, and Middle-East & Africa. The Asia-Pacific was the major market for toluene in 2016. China is the largest consumer, owing to the growing demand for toluene in various end-user industries such as automotive, building & construction, industrial, and oil & gas, among others.

Opportunities and Major Players
