Imports were down at 1,581 million pieces in 2019. Imports are now primarily sourced from Poland and Lithuania.By 2030 it is forecast that cigarette sales volumes will fall by 22.2%, to 1,105 million pieces, while the per capita consumption of domestically purchased and manufactured cigarettes is expected to fall by 27.5%, to 188 pieces.

  • Ultra-mild, extra mild and mild brands accounted for an estimated 53% of sales as of 2019 to put them in the majority. Mild brands took an estimated 39.1% of sales in 2019, followed by ultra-mild (9.2%) and extra mild (4.7%). Full flavor cigarettes took the remaining 47% of sales in 2019.
  • Smoker numbers are down 39.3% on 1990 levels with quitters either giving up tobacco completely or switching to smokeless alternatives such as snus.
  • Denmark emerged as the largest source of imports in 2007, at 21.3% or 449 million pieces, rising to 1,269 million pieces in 2008 (42.1%) before declining to 1,194 million pieces in 2009 (39.9%) and 771 million pieces in 2010 (28.3%).
