Project Insight: Road Construction Projects - Middle East and Africa

Summary

Construction Intelligence Center (CIC) is currently tracking road related construction projects in the Middle East and Africa with a total value of US$198.7 billion. Of this, US$128.9 billion is in the execution stage and US$29.5 billion is in the pre-execution stage. Qatar accounts for the highest value with US$32.0 billion, followed by Algeria with projects valuing US$19.5 billion. Kenya and Iran follow with road construction projects with a value of US$15.0 billion and US$12.0 billion respectively. The highest value project tracked by the CIC in the region is the US$10.2 billion Hauts-Plateaux National Highway, which involves the construction of a 1,020km highway between Tlemcen and Tebessa in Algeria, followed by the US$9.0 billion Lusail Infrastructure Development in Qatar.

The region lags behind other global regions for a forecasted total value of cumulative transport infrastructure investment to 2025 and this is reflected in the value of road projects tracked by CIC which lags behind the other three regions. Sub-Saharan Africa is however forecast to achieve the fastest average annual growth rate in regional infrastructure market, and is expected to achieve over 11% per year in transport investment in the period of 2015 to 2025. The majority of this growth is expected in roads and ports. Road investment will gather pace in the Middle East up to 2025, with car ownership increasing sharply. Therefore, road investment is forecast to rise by 116%, to reach US$31 billion per year in the period 2015 to 2025.
