The Asia-Pacific aquafeed market (henceforth referred as ‘the Asia-Pacific market’) was valued USD 28,968.77 million in 2016, and is projected to reach USD 53,091.69 million by 2023, at a CAGR of 10.63%, over the forecast period. Produced in the form of granules or pellets, aquafeed provides nutrition in a stable and concentrated form, enabling aquatic species to feed efficiently and grow to their full potential. Asia-Pacific contributes to around 90% of the global aquaculture production. The major aquafeed producers are China, India, Vietnam, the Philippines and Japan. China is the largest Asia-Pacific market for fish, which is driving the aquafeed demand in the region. The Asia-Pacific market, although accounting for a significant share of the overall market, is relatively unexplored, owing to the low level of organizing in the industry.

Seafood is the preferred meat type in Asia-Pacific countries, such as China, Indonesia and the Philippines. The growing middle class population in developing nations and their increasing income are expected to maintain the aquaculture industry growth in the long term. A variety of fish, prawns, lobsters and crabs are abundantly available in these countries and form an integral part of the diet, as they are an important source of high-quality protein and contain many vitamins and minerals. Fish contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are good to heart and also enhance brain activity and reproduction. They form a primary food source in many countries. Aquaculture has the potential of producing large quantities for a relatively lower cost when compared to ruminants, fowl, or swine. With the limited availability of marine feed resources and the growing global fish demand, the aquaculture sector, particularly, fish farming is expected to grow thus driving the aquafeed market. Food safety concerns are also promoting fish farming, as they offer a higher level of food security. The restraining factors include high levels of mercury and other accumulated toxins found in seafood.
