Overview:

The fifth generation (5G) of cellular communications is rapidly approaching commercial introduction.  Some leading communication service providers (CSP) are claiming introduction of 5G as early as 2018, which is really based on improvements to LTE technology. The big impact will begin starting in 2020 as new radio technologies based on millimeter wave propagation are introduced, bringing improved capacity, reduced latency, and substantial improvements to bandwidth management including dynamic allocation and quality of experience management.

While LPWAN will continue to be a viable option for many relatively simple IoT applications across various industry verticals, cellular CSPs will leverage 5G to position themselves as the dominant providers of IoT services for enterprise. The reasons are many including improvements in scale and scope enabled by improved capacity, flexibility, and new capabilities.   Highly complementary to 5G, Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) is poised to transform ICT to create a new communications-computation paradigm in which planning, engineering, deployment, and operation of telecommunications and computing will occur simultaneously.

The author sees 5G as a launch pad for CSPs to establish a dominant position for support of IoT apps and services in certain industry verticals, especially within an industrial setting. The Manufacturing sector will be an early beneficiary with many new IIoT apps and improved business models such as teleoperation.  Leading communication service providers will leverage their investment in Software Defined Networks (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) to optimize network slice allocation as well as overall network management and 5G orchestration.

This research provides an in-depth assessment of both technical issues (enabling technologies, 5G standardization and research initiatives, spectrum bands, etc.) and business areas (market drivers, challenges, use cases, vertical market applications, regulatory issues, trial commitments, introduction strategies, and impact to CSPs), as well as analysis of the emerging 5G ecosystem.  The report includes specific ecosystem constituent recommendations and forecasts for both 5G investments, subscriptions, and more for the period of 2018 – 2030.
