The Chinese agricultural irrigation machinery market is projected to register a CAGR of 7.8% during the forecast period (2020-2025).
  • China is the country with the largest area equipped for irrigation, as the area under arable land accounted for 118.9 thousand hectares. Agriculture contributes approximately 3.4% to China’s GDP. Farming accounts for about 65% of water use in China. It is also Iis one of the highest producers, as well as consumers of water-intensive crops, such as rice and corn.
  • As the most populous country in the world, China has always been facing challenges for food security. The food security is vulnerable due to rapid urbanization leading to shrinkage of arable land, and climate change is projected to modify precipitation geographically and temporally, placing more stress on water resources.

Key Market Trends

Increasing Awareness of Drip Irrigation System

The drip irrigation segment is projected to witness one of the highest CAGR during the forecast period. Mostly, subsurface drip irrigation systems are used in the country to facilitate agricultural production both for human consumption and animal use. This allows the farmers to focus on the cattle, while still ensuring that there is sufficient food for the animals with the right nutritional quality. This results in enormous financial savings and has lead to higher revenues, in the micro-irrigation systems market. This, in turn, has been driving the overall market for irrigation in the country. The only factor, which may restrict the drip irrigation systems market, is its high cost, which farmers have to incur, especially when they are far from the water source.

Dominance of Major Water Consuming Crops

China majorly produces and exports maize, rice, and sugarcane to feed the local growing population and to countries, such as Korea, Vietnam, Egypt, and Turkey. Sugarcane requires a large amount of water at about 645-738.6 metric ton per year in China. The crop production of irrigated areas is much higher than that of non-irrigated land, especially in northwest China where the production of irrigated paddy land is about three times higher than that of non-irrigated land. The production of maize, rice, and sugarcane was 257.3 million metric ton, 214.0 million metric ton, and 108.7 million metric ton respectively during the financial year 2018. Thus, to produce a huge quantity of such crops, the farmers became highly dependent on the use of irrigation systems, like drip and sprinkler irrigation systems. This, in turn, drove the market for agricultural machinery in the country.

Competitive Landscape

The market share analysis indicates that the market studied is consolidated, with major companies accounting for about majority of the market share. With the governments’ thrust on augmenting the penetration of water conservation and efficiency driven by the micro-irrigation system, the market is estimated to witness substantial growth in the near future. This is expected to benefit major companies, such as Nelson Irrigation, Netafim, The Toro Company, Lindsay Corporation, and T-L Irrigation Co.
