The global isocynates market is expected grow at a significant rate during the forecast period, majorly driven by the increasing demand from polyurethane foam applications. Isocyanates are a group of highly reactive, low-molecular-weight chemicals. They are commonly dissolved in aromatic solvents, such as xylene and toluene, which in themselves are toxic. Isocyanates are highly reactive materials that are used for manufacturing polyurethane products, such as chemicals, polyurethane foam, insulation materials, surface coatings, car seats, furniture, foam mattresses, under-carpet padding, packaging materials, shoes, laminated fabrics, polyurethane rubber, and adhesives.

Huge Growth in the Polyurethane Foam Application

MDI and TDI is primarily used in production of rigid & flexible polyurethane foams, which are used as insulating materials in homes, refrigerators, and many other uses. Insulating foams can help consumer save on their heating and cooling costs. Moreover, these foams are also used in automotive seats and furniture industry.

The building industry is by far the largest consumer for rigid and spray polyurethane foam. With rising number of building codes that promote energy-efficient structures, home builders and consumers are gradually moving toward building strategies that deliver performance and energy savings in the long run. The growth in automotive industry in the Asia-Pacific region, recovery of Brazil automotive market in Brazil and automotive production investment in Middle-East & Africa will drive the demand for polyurethane foams.

Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate (MDI) to Dominate the Market

4,4’-MDI is the most widely used isomer among the three isomers of MDI, with major application as a primary feedstock for the production of rigid PU (PU) foams. These foams have good thermal insulation properties and are used in the manufacturing of freezers & refrigerators, and in building and automotive applications. PU rigid insulation foams are a major part of the PU industry, representing nearly 20% of the market. The versatility of rigid PU foam makes it suitable for an extensive range of insulation applications. The building and construction segment stood as the leading end-user industry amongst all in 2016, and the appliances occupy the next position. Moreover, rigid PU foam is the leading material used to insulate major appliances, like refrigerators, freezers, hot water heaters, and vending machines. Rigid PU foam is an essential and cost-effective material that can be used to meet the required energy ratings in consumer refrigerators and freezers.

Asia-Pacific dominating the Isocynates Market

In Asia-Pacific, China is the world's largest producer and consumer of polyurethane products. China's demand for polyurethane products account for about 45% of global demand, and is expected to maintain a growth rate of around 10% over the next couple years, with the share in global demand for polyurethane products increasing to 55% by 2017. MDI is primarily used for polyurethane, in China. Polyurethane, MDI’s primary application in India, is witnessing a boom in opportunities, with the expanding middle class, increasing disposable incomes, and rising urbanization, supplemented strongly by investments in infrastructure. In Japan, the production of polyurethane is on the rise. According Japan’s Ministry of International Trade and Industry, year-to-date polyurethane production in Japan in September 2017 was 145 kilo metric ton, up 11.4% from 2016. This increased production of polyurethane and increasing demand from construction automotive and furniture industry would likely augment the market growth for isocynates.

Key Developments in the Market

December 2017: 3A Composites announced the successful acquisition of Athlone Extrusions Ltd. by its parent company Schweiter Technologies

January 2017: COVESTRO will invest around EUR 200 million to increase production in Tarragona (Spain), beyond 2020. As a first step, it intends to build its own chlorine supply, thus ensuring a highly efficient, sustainable, and independent supply of the crucial raw material. Covestro will also debottleneck its local methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) plant, increasing production capacity by 50,000 metric ton to around 220,000 metric ton per year

Major Players: DowDuPont Inc., Huntsman Corporation, BASF SE, Covestro, Yantai Sanjiang Chemical Industry Material Co., Ltd., amongst others.
