The global biosurfactants market is expected to grow at a significant rate during the forecast period of 2018—2023, driven by the growing personal care industry in emerging economies. Biosurfactants are surface-active substances, synthesized by microorganisms or produced extracellularly. They are hydrophobic and hydrophilic and are capable of reducing the surface tension and interfacial tension between individual molecule at the surface and interface.

Growing Personal Care Industry in Emerging Economies

Personal care was the second largest industry for application of biosurfactants, which accounted for over 10% of consumption in the global biosurfactants market in 2017. The growing market for personal care products in emerging economies, coupled with increasing awareness about the advantages of bioproducts is expected to boost the demand for biosurfactants. The tier-two markets like that of South Korea, South Africa, Argentina, and Poland, among others, are expected to witness a rapid rise in demand for personal care products.

Agriculture to Dominate the Biosurfactants Market

Biosurfactants are used to improve soil quality by soil remediation. They act as mobilizing agents and enhance the solubility of bio-hazardous chemical compounds. Biosurfactants also help microbes to absorb soil particles occupied by pollutants. Moreover, they are also used for hydrophilization of heavy soils to achieve good wettability and even distribution of fertilizers in the soil. Furthermore, they prevent fertilizers from caking, during storage. Rhamnolipids, one of the biosurfactant products, is known for its properties that are suitable for antimicrobial activity.

India to Dominate the Biosurfactants Market

Asia-Pacific is majorly dominated by China, Japan, and India. China was the largest consumer of biosurfactants in 2017, and the country is likely to continue its dominance during the forecast period. Continuous growth in population is fuelling the demand for personal care, soaps, and detergents in the country, which, in turn, is augmenting biosurfactants market. Moreover, the demand for biosurfactants in soaps and detergents was high in 2017. This segment is estimated to continue its dominance during the forecast period, primarily due to the increasing household applications.

Major players include BASF Cognis, Ecover, Urumqi Unite Bio-Technology Co., Ltd, and Soliance, amongst others.
