The global x-by-wire system market was valued at USD 92.21 million in 2017, and is projected to witness a CAGR of 13.90%, during the forecast period 2018-2023.The emergence of advanced driver assistance systems and the increasing levels of automation in vehicles are expected to increase the demand for automotive x-by-wire systems. However, currently, these systems have low penetration rates in the automotive market, owing to reliability issues, primarily due to instances of failure. In the coming years, the systems are expected to gain strong traction in the automotive industry, as they ensure superior control over vehicle systems, as compared to present-day conventional linkages, such as wires and hydraulic systems.

Among x-by-wire systems, steer-by-wire and brake-by-wire systems are expected to witness high growth rates during the forecast period, owing to continuous technological advancements, coupled with new product developments by major players. Additionally, increasing investment in electronic power steering by automakers is one of the major drivers for the adoption of steer-by-wire systems, as the cost of migration from conventional steering linkages to steer-by-wire systems is expected to be low.

Increasing Focus on Fuel Efficiency

With growing environmental concerns, governments and environment agencies across the world have been continually working toward reducing exhaust emissions. They have also been focusing on improving fuel economy, which in turn is also expected to aid in reducing exhaust emissions. As a result, automobile manufacturers have been working toward reducing the overall weight of vehicles, as it can ensure prominent reduction in CO2 emissions. Weight reduction of 10 kilogram is estimated to save 1 gram of CO2 emission per kilometer. An electric steering system replaces the hydraulic piston and pump with an electric motor. The motor draws electricity from the battery only when the vehicle is turning. There is no power loss in such systems, which decreases the fuel consumption of the vehicle.

All the aforementioned developments aid in weight reduction, in turn resulting in fuel efficiency and less carbon emission. Mechanically linked vehicles have numerous moving parts inside of them, which, in turn, adds extra weight to the vehicle. However, x-by-wire technology utilizes fewer moving parts, by replacing vehicle controls such as steering, braking, shifting, throttle, and clutch, while reducing the weight of the vehicle at the same time. With less moving parts, there is less demand for fuel, as electronics ultimately run off the car battery, in turn resulting in better fuel efficiency in the vehicle. Thus, better fuel efficiency leads to less carbon emission. These uses of x-by-wire systems aids in fuel economy savings of ~4%.

Throttle-by-wire System is expected to dominate the Market

The throttle-by-wire system segment is expected to reach USD 148.42 million by 2023. In throttle-by-wire systems, the throttle valve is electronically actuated using an electric motor (mostly used DC servomotor), which, in turn, receives signals from the electronic control unit (ECU), based on the inputs from accelerator pedal position. The throttle-by-wire system, also popularly known as the electronic throttle system, was initially introduced by BMW E32 7-series in 1988.Thereafter, the electronic throttle system has been widely adopted by automakers, as it ensures fatigue-free driving, by overcoming the issue faced by the conventional throttle systems, where accelerator pedal often becomes stiff to use with time, due to wear of the throttle cable. Additionally, the throttle-by-wire system ensures reduced weight along with improved fuel efficiency, after the removal of mechanical linkages or throttle cable.

However, recently, the throttle-by-wire system encountered few recalls in the automotive industry, due to electronic (such as pedal position sensor, motor actuator, and electronic control unit) failures. Recently, in 2017, Ford models of 2015-2016, equipped with electronic throttle system, have been recalled, majorly in the United States, due to contamination of internal contacts of electric motor in the electronic throttle system, which resulted in increased electrical resistance and reduced amount of power and speed of the engine during driving conditions. The consistent efforts for the development of improved electronics (such as compact IC drive for electric motor, reliable and high range position sensors, and improved software in ECUs) have been aiding significantly in reducing the recalls of the vehicles due to failure of throttle-by-wire systems in the automotive industry. Thus, despite the high price of the throttle-by-wire system at factory fitment and replacement, the demand for throttle-by-wire system has been increasing, and is expected to witness a considerable growth in the automotive industry during the forecast period.
