With the countries like India that share their majority of boundaries with Pakistan and China in the mountainous region with the last war being fought between India and Pakistan on the hills of Kargil. Therefore it’s very important for countries to know the art of Mountain Warfare which is on the rise particularly between enemy neighbors.

THE NEW AGE WAR

The security situation of the world has been hitting a new low in the recent times, killing thousands of innocent lives, and the countries are in danger from external forces if proper precautions are not taken. Conventional warfare does not happen nowadays as less traditional methods are used, and alpine warfare is one of them and sometimes there is no other option but to use alpine warfare, as boundaries of certain countries are mountainous. Thus we see an increased focus on Mountain or Alpine Warfare especially in countries that are surrounded by mountainous regions.

Mountain warfare is a specialised art, and a regular soldier with just basic training cannot cope with the demands. Specialised or professional training is more useful in case of attack because in mountain warfare the attacking side has to have considerably more numbers of firepower as compared to the defending side. Mountain warfare is so specialized that sometimes even trained forces are not able to overcome the enemy. Taking the example of the US who despite having a far more superior technology as compared to the Taliban could not make much of an impact on them because of the enemy’s strategic use of their mountain base. Mountain warfare can be fought on a glacier, an origin of a river, slopes where even animals suited to the conditions cannot reach, so mountain warfare requires tremendous energy, willpower and most importantly the right equipment. It is said that mobility in mountain warfare performs the function of a great multiplier in combat. The Taliban has been successful in rebuffing the American Advances because its personnel are indigenous people and are accustomed to that type of terrain, so to counter this disadvantage maybe focus has also to be put on recruiting personnel accustomed to those conditions.

The armed forces need various types of equipment for this purpose like Artillery, fighter jets, Bombers, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Mountain Gear, Ballistic Missiles etc. are some of the commonly imported Arms for use in Mountain Warfare. The maker of such types of equipment mostly hails from the US, a leader in the market followed by Russia and China. The US of America accounts for 33% of all the Arms Exports in the World. India is one of the countries whose majority of the Fighting happens in the mountainous regions, so naturally accounts for one of the largest shares of specialized equipment.

Key Developments

One of the recent developments in the mountain warfare market is T129 ATAK Helicopter, specifically meant for High Altitude Warfare or difficult geographic boundaries, it has a service ceiling of 6100 meters which can prove very useful.
