  • Wireless charging is an emerging technology, which allows a vehicle to charge without being plugged into a charging station. A wireless charging system consists of a ground pad that lies beneath a parked vehicle and a receiving system embedded into the underside of the PEV that connects to the vehicle’s power electronics and battery systems.
  • Currently, Evatran (Plugless) is the only company producing wireless charging systems for commercial use in the aftermarket sector. The company’s charging systems are compatible to Chevrolet Bolt, Nissan Leaf, Cadillac ELR, and Tesla Model S. Recently, the company developed more than 7 KW charging pad for Model S, which helps charge the vehicle in less than two hours.
  • \Wireless charging is one of the best solution available for fast electric vehicle charging, however, there are major challenges in this technology, such as increasing the Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) range with acceptable efficiency level.
  • Design and optimization of resonators play a major role in improving the system’s performance in the extended range. With the advent of modern semiconductor technologies, such as wideband gap devices, frequency limit of the high power WPT system has been increasing rapidly. Growing Electric Vehicle Sales Driving the Wireless Charging Demand

In 2018, Electric Vehicle (EV) and Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle (PHEV) sale have set another record with a 22% increase compared to 2017. Approximately, 345,000 sales of plug-in vehicles, of which close to 190,000 fully electric cars and almost 155,000 plug-in hybrid cars.

The European passenger plug-in vehicle market witnessed ~37,000 registrations in April 2019, growing 30% compared to the same period of 2018. In April 2019, fully electric vehicles (BEV) jumped 70% year over year (YoY), to reach ~24,000 deliveries. The BEV share of the overall auto market was 1.8%. Adding plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) to the total, the share jumps to 2.8%, and that makes the 2019 plug-in vehicle (PEV) share 3.0% so far (2.0% for BEVs alone), above the 2.5% result of 2018.

The Nissan Leaf witnessed increased sales, setting a new annual sales record for an electric car in Europe, to reach ~39,000 sales. In 2018, Renault Zoe, improved its sales and recorded a total sales of 37,000 vehicles in Europe. The third position was held by Volkswagen e-Golf, up 66% to over 21,000 sales, which is 4,7% of total European sales for the Golf, up 2% points on 2017.

For 2019, it is anticipated that the demand for new plug-in hybrid models increase, as companies are re-launching their plug-in hybrid models. For instance, Volkswagen will relaunch the Golf GTE and Passat GTE with larger battery packs and Porsche will relaunch the Cayenne and Panamera e-Hybrid as well as a Bentley Bentayga with the same technology. BMW is likely to add the X3 to its PHEV product portfolio and Mercedes-Benz expected to update plug-in versions of the C-, E- and S-Class.

Norway Is Leading the Electric Vehicle Demand in the Region

In 2018, the most popular market for Electric Vehicle in Europe was the Norway, recorded 46.057 units of sales (+39%), followed by Germany at 34,543 sales (+40%), France at 30,939 sales (+24%), Netherlands at 24,284 sales (+202%), and the UK at 14,504 sales (+7%).

Norway's capital Oslo will become the first city in the world to install wireless charging systems for electric taxis, hoping to make recharging quick and efficient enough to speed the take-up of non-polluting cabs. From 2023 onward all taxis in Oslo will have to be zero emission and Norway wants all new cars to be zero emission by 2025.
