Ceramic coatings find ample use in automobiles. They are mostly used on exhaust components to decrease temperature. Their low heat absorption property also makes them suitable for use in heaters to keep the under-the-hood temperature low. They are also known to provide a 3% gain in horsepower when coated on the entire exhaust system. They keep the engine bay cooler and safer. Thus, they are increasingly being used in exhaust systems. Ceramic coatings reduce wear, lower the operating temperature, and decrease friction when coated on engine parts, such as piston tops, rings & valves, rods, etc. Furthermore, with the increasing environment-related regulations with respect to vehicle emissions, automobile manufacturers are increasingly shifting to ceramic coatings.

Aerospace & Defense is the Largest Application

Aerospace is the largest application of thermal-sprayed ceramic coatings. Various airplane components, like engines, rotors, and other mechanical parts, require hard and wear-resistant coatings that can withstand high temperatures. Therefore, they use ceramic coatings. The growth of the aerospace sector, particularly the civil aviation sector, in emerging economies, like India and China, coupled with the growing foreign investments will affect the market positively.

China to Lead the Ceramics Coatings Market

The ceramic coating market in China is primarily driven by the rising demand in the automotive industry, growing consumer economic status in the region, and the increasing usage in textile industry. The application of ceramic coatings for thermal insulation in aerospace applications, like space shuttles, makes them attractive to that segment of the market, and therefore, ceramic coatings are witnessing a fast growth due to the increased interest in space. Additionally, the increasing nano-technological applications market, where electronic devices are manufactured using coatings, appears to be a significant market in the future.
