The United States industrial enzymes market is expected to amount to USD 1550.16 million in 2018 and is estimated to grow at an estimated CAGR of 7.3% during the forecast period, majorly driven by the growing diversity in enzyme applications and stringent environmental norms curbing the use of chemicals.

Diversity in Enzymes Applications Driving the Market

Innovations in the field of various process technologies and recombinant techniques in the past decade has helped improve yields through fermentation, selection of appropriate enzymes, altered specificity, and increased stability. Such techniques have been extending the applications of enzymes in the food technology and several other sectors. New enzymes based on the genome information for wood degrading microorganisms are available in the public domain, which has helped to develop cost-effective enzyme-based applications, such as in bio-pulping, pulp bleaching, and others, in the paper industry.

Food Processing Application Dominated in Market

Food processing application has dominated the US industrial enzymes market, accounting for more than half of the total market share, in 2017. Enzymes are used in the food and beverage industry to improve quality, nutritive value, color, fragrance, or appearance. The production of diary and beverages is increasing continuously in the country over the last few years. The breweries industry is benefitting from the increasing demand from consumers for new variety of craft beers manufactured from local microbreweries. The milk production output is supported by affordable feed costs and strong domestic demand in the country. Food production in the United States is concentrated between multinational giants, such as PepsiCo, Tyson Foods, Nestle, and JBS USA.

Lipase Type to Grow at the Fastest Rate

Carbohydrases has the largest share of about 53% among type in the Unites States in 2017. Currently lipases account for only 10% of the total industrial enzymes market share, but is expected to grow at the fastest rate, due to growing concerns of consumers towards health and obesity. With the development of enzymes technology, the lipase industrial applications has increased over the years. It is majorly used in the food and detergent industries. The other industries where lipases are used, include oil & gas, detergent, pulp & paper, leather, textile, cosmetics, and biodiesel.

Notable Developments in the Market

October 2017: DSM announced its plans to acquire a biochemical company, Koninklijke Gist-Brocades NV, for USD 1.32 billion which is likely to expand the company’s product portfolio of fine chemicals and food ingredients.

Major Players: Novozymes, DowDuPont, DSM, AB Enzymes, and BASF SE among others.
