The Europe syn gas market is expected to grow at a high rate during the forecast period (2018 - 2023). Germany is estimated to lead the market owing to its growing requirement for clean energy. Power generation is expected to be the largest end-use market.

Feedstock Flexibility for the Syngas Production

Syn gas is produced from natural gas, naphtha, coal, heavy oils, pet coke, biomass, and municipal waste. The increasing need for alternative fuel sources and the limited availability of conventional fuel has increased the global production of syngas. Syn gas can be produced from a variety of feedstock, which has little effect on the quality of syngas. In addition, the cost of production of syngas is directly related to the cost of feedstock which gives manufacturers a flexibility to use any type of feedstock. This flexibility in the usage of feedstock for the production of syngas is driving the global market for syn gas.

Power Generation to Dominate the Market

Power generation will continue to dominate the market for European syn gas during the forecast period. The increase in the energy consumption due to a rise in the population, coupled with growth in industrial production due to the ongoing economic recovery in the European region, is expected to drive the power generation end-user industry. According to European Union (EU), the total net electricity generation in 2015 was 3.07 million gigawatt hours (gWh), which grew by 1.3% from 2014. The increase in the consumption of electricity from the residential & commercial sectors and the rising demand for clean energy is expected to drive the power generation end-user market, which in turn, is likely to drive the syn gas market in the forecast period.

Germany to lead the market

Germany is projected to dominate the syngas market during the forecast period due to its growing energy consumption. The growing industrial activities, coupled with the increase in electricity consumption due to a rise in the population, have increased the production of syngas. In addition, an increase in environment-related concerns with respect to greenhouse gas emissions is expected to drive the market for syngas in Germany during the forecast period.

Key Developments

October 2017: Praxair Inc., an industrial gas company signed an agreement with BASF SE to construct a syngas processing plant at BASF's campus in Geismar, Germany.

Major Players: Agrium Inc., BASF SE, BP Global, CF Industries Holdings Inc., and ConocoPhillips Co., among others.
