Increasing Demand for Fuel-efficient Vehicles

Aramid fibers are essential for meeting the increasing demands of the transportation industry. In the automotive industry, it is used in brake pads, gaskets, rubber reinforcements (hoses, belts), tires, etc. A vehicle weight reduction of 100 kg saves up to 12.5 g of CO2 emissions every km. In other words, every kg in car weight reduction can save 20 kg greenhouse gas emissions throughout the lifetime of a car. Furthermore, volatile and gradually increasing gas prices lead to a higher demand for lightweight cars with higher fuel efficiency. Lightweight cars require less energy to fulfil certain performance requirements. Therefore, either the performance (acceleration, top speed) and/or the fuel economy can be increased. Various studies revealed that on average, a 5-8% better fuel efficiency can be achieved by reducing the vehicle weight by 10%. The increasing production of motor vehicles in countries such as Algeria and Morocco is expected to support the growth of aramid fiber in the Middle East & African region during the forecast period.

Para-aramid Type Witnessing Fastest Growth

Para-aramid fiber offers twice the modulus of steel and 6-8 times higher tensile strength at only one-fifth the weight, in comparison to other commodity fibers. These fibers have a high continuous operating temperature. This allows these fibers to withstand long-time exposure to high temperature. However, increase of heat degrades the fiber, reducing its tensile properties. Para-aramids are also gaining increasing momentum from defense applications such as bullets, bomb fragments & shrapnel, etc. These are also used in applications for race cars, protective gloves, wire & cable, and hose reinforcement.

Saudi Arabia Driving the Demand

Saudi Arabia is estimated to be one of the largest contributors to the growth of the aramid fibers market in the region. Despite the robust automotive components market in the country, the increasing government support and incentives for boosting the domestic production in the country are expected to increase the demand for aramid fibers in the coming years. Also, the expanding aerospace MRO market is expected to increase the consumption of aramid fibers at a moderate rate. Increasing defense spending in Saudi Arabia is also another factor that is projected to boost the demand for aramid fiber products in the country.
