Traffic lighting up: Gold and red kiwifruit varieties are contributing to sustained revenue growth

Kiwifruit and berry farmers are in the midst of fluctuating growing conditions. International trade has recovered in recent years, allowing export channels to bring in swathes of revenue. Rising kiwifruit production has allowed industry growers to supply more markets. Harsh global growing conditions have pushed fruit prices up, allowing industry farmers to plant additional crops and capitalise on their stronger returns. Improved orchard management and a heightened focus on disease-resistant kiwifruit cultivars have improved per-hectare harvest volumes and orchard efficiency. Berry exports have remained relatively small as a share of the industry as kiwifruit sales have blossomed. Fruit production has been stifled in 2022-23 as Cyclone Gabrielle, flooding and frost blasts have devastated some orchards. Overall, revenue has climbed by an estimated 9.3% annually over the five years through 2022-23 to $2.9 billion.

Industry producers primarily grow kiwifruit, strawberries, blackberries or other berry fruit. Growers of stone fruit, pome fruit, grapes and other fruits are excluded from the industry.
