The global hexagonal boron nitride market accounted for USD 658.11 million, in 2017. The market studied is expected to reach USD 899.2 million by 2023, at an estimated CAGR of 5.44%, over the forecast period, 2018 to 2023.

Increasing Demand from Electrical and Electronics Sector

Hexagonal boron nitride has witnessed an increase in demand from the electronics sector in the past few years. This is majorly owing to the superior properties offered by it, such as thermal stability and good dielectric properties due to which it is gaining preference in the electronics sector. Additionally, it offers properties, such as high thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion, thermal shock resistance, and high electrical resistance. The electronics industry in Asia-Pacific has witnessed a massive increase in the past few years due to the technological developments China and India. India’s consumer electronics industry has witnessed an increase of more than 58% between 2010 and 2016 and is further projected to have double growth in the next three years and reach a value of 228 USD billion by 2020. According to India Electronics and Semiconductor Association, India’s electronics sector is expected to receive investments of nearly ~17,000 INR Crores under the central government's M-SIPS (Modified Special Incentive Package Scheme) and EDF (Electronic Development Fund) in order to increase domestic production of electronics under the 'Make in India' initiative. Furthermore, there have been investments made by the Chinese government in the country’s electronics sector, which in turn is expected to boost the demand for hexagonal boron nitride from the sector during the forecast period.

Demand from Personal Care Sector is Expected to Increase

Hexagonal boron nitride finds usage in skin care, hair care, make-up, and others. In cosmetics, hexagonal boron nitride functions as a slip modifier. The highest concentration of use is in eyeshadow formulations. Products containing hexagonal boron nitride are also used on the baby skin (in a lotion, oil, powder, or cream), can be applied to the eye area or mucous membranes, and possibly be ingested or inhaled. Boron nitride is reported to be used at up to 25% in eye product formulations, at 2% in lipstick formulations, up to 16% in powders, and at up to 0.9% in fragrance preparations. In practice, 95-99% of the particles released from cosmetic sprays have aerodynamic equivalent diameters in the 10 to 110 µm range. Therefore, most particles incidentally inhaled from these sprays are deposited in the nasopharyngeal region and are not respirable. Hence, the demand for hexagonal boron nitride from this application segment is estimated to grow at a healthy rate, over the forecast period.

Asia-Pacific to Witness Strong Growth

Asia-Pacific dominated the market for hexagonal boron nitride in 2017. The region is also projected to witness the fastest growth during the forecast period majorly due to the increasing electrical & electronics production in the region. In Asia-Pacific, China is expected to witness strong growth in the demand for hexagonal boron nitride, owing to the favourable government support to electrical & electronics industry to increase production. China is the world’s largest electronics production base and offers a tough competition to existing upstream producers like South Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan. Electronic products, such as smartphones, OLED TVs, tablets, and so on, have the highest growth in the market in the consumer electronics segment. With the increase in the disposable income of the middle-class population, the demand for electronic products is projected to grow in the near future. Hence, such increasing government efforts to increase the production of electric vehicles and electronics production in the region is anticipated to drive the demand for hexagonal boron nitride in the coming years.
