The Latin America market for bioinsecticides was valued at USD 196.5 million in 2017. Bioinsecticides hold around half of the market share. Over 6,000 plant species have been identified, which possess insecticidal properties. In insect pest management, a number of plant products derived from neem, custard apple, tobacco, pyrethrum, etc., have been used as safe insecticides. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is the most explored and commercially successful microbial insecticide.

Low Shelf Life
Storage of biopesticides requires special facilities, along with skills, which most producers, shopkeepers, and farmers do not possess, especially in the developing parts of the world. Since biopesticides often contain living material, the products have reduced shelf lives. Also, their efficacy is often variable, due to the influence of various biotic and abiotic factors. Shelf life is the end result of several factors, like production technology, carrier and packaging material used, and the mode and distance of transport.
